The strokes did save rock'n'roll

remember a while ago when the rock scene was plagued with
radiohead wannabies?

starsailor, remy zero, muse, coldplay, travis, etc..

the strokes came in and brought along a lot of 'THE' bands
wich are actually quite good and refreshing..

there's the darkness, the coral, the yeah yeah yeah's, the
thrills, kings of leon mars volta...

i dunno.. it just seems like the rock scene right now is in
good shape (surrounded by lots of crappy music as usual) and
i believe the strokes were responsible for that ..

you've got to be fucking kidding me. a bunch of stooges and
mc5 wannabe bands (strokes, white stripes, vines, hives..)
are "saving" rock 'n' roll? only if you're 14 and don't know
music outside of what's on the radio... come on.

it's not to be taken to heart; anyone on this board
obviously has great taste in music. it's just a stimulatory
type question, not an insult. some of you people are really
delicate.

haha you really can be a total twát sometimes you know :P

I mean stimulatory actually means shitstirring in this case,
and it was a statement you made not a question.

OK

i'm not 14, and i know much other music other than what's
outside the radio.

and i like the aforementioned groups.

and the radio now comparted to the radio.. lets say.. 1 year
ago is a lot better. because of those bands that put the
nu-metal phase in the dark. that's my point.

now go ahead and call me a cunt again.

ok crovax you're telling me kings of leon and the mars volta
suck?
---

why is almost everyone on this board a nerd, bitter and
resented with society.

cunt?

no i only said that because it's funny how quick people are
to reply back just to call someone a name.. as i said, i was
just keeping to topic, and in my opinion it's ridiculous to
think any band, especially a retro/wannabe band, can "save"
rock. i agree that the radio's much more listenable now than
it was a year ago (and especially 2 years ago) but there're
so many better rock bands out now than those imitators.
that's why i was surprised you or anyone else on here would
think so highly (whether you enjoy them or not; i enjoy some
of it, personally) of them.

it all comes down to marketing; next year it'll be some
other fad that most people will be listening to.

(maybe mars volta)

OK let me rephrase then...

the strokes saved the radio.

agree?

not really. if clear channel promoters and BBC executives
didn't like the strokes they'd still be nobodies playing
shitty clubs in NY.

first they gained popularity with NYC socialities. basically
people most of us can't stand decided they were "fun" and
started recommending them to their friends until they became
trendy in NY and elite circles nationwide.

then they caught on in the UK, i'm sure in no small part due
to rags like the NME. they could have picked anyone, but
they decided this would be marketable (mostly because it's a
"safe" sound--music that rocked as early as FORTY fucking
years ago--and because of the strokes' and jack white's good
looks.

THEN clear channel decided if they're huge in europe they
should test them out here. the vaguely familiar (see:
stooges, mc5, television, kinks, rolling stones, velvet
underground) sound was really easily digested by the masses
(like easy listening swing music a few years back, radio
friendly ska and punk, big beat techno, etc.) and a TREND
emerged.

so did the strokes save the radio? fuck no, they're just the
current "it" band. it's fine to like what's on the radio;
i've made loads of purchases and downloads based on
mainstream radio. but to think they came out of nowhere and
chased away that godawful nu-metal, which has a very short
shelflife anyway (puberty), is naive. this college music has
slightly more longetivity to it but it won't last long
either. fads die out.

go ahead and tell me i'm wrong, people, give me a convincing
argument to the contrary. i'm opinionated because i know
what i'm talking about.

OK, i don't normally agree with tits cuz he is an
opinionated bastard some times, but he knows his shit like
no one else here.

I follow rock music as much as anyone here, and his
explanation was SPOT on.

seriously, that is how it works. funky sells and if it
sells, the radio whores it out as new and anti-pop.

titsworth may not say what you like, but he means what he
says, and his analysis was correct.

*tits, if you think I'm kissing your ass I'll throw
pies.....I will!*

like them or not it's a little unfair to place radiohead in
the same category as those other bands.. they sound nothing
alike and came out much earlier.

the strokes want to be the stooges. the white stripes are
boring. the vines just suck period.

i think the only good rock bands still around are queens of
the stone age, sloan, foo fighters, zwan, black rebel
motorcycle club, tool, beck, brian jonestown massacre,
radiohead and the dandy warhols...with the addition of all
the underground bands that have never and will never
change.

if you want a real rock record get "take them on, on your
own" by BRMC.

no the mars volta is an off-shoot of the now defunked band
at the Drive-in... 2001 at the earliest... whereas the
Strokes were formed in 1998... not that it matters at all
because the strokes didn't save anything... nor did the mars
volta...

i'll totally stick up for you. i fucking love the strokes
and the white stripes and a lot of these so called "stooges
and mc5 wannabes".
i wouldnt say they saved rock 'n' roll, but they definetely
brought something new and exciting, albeit derived from
other music.....but all music is.

people go on and on about being "original" and to be
honest.....everythings been done before....so why get all
uptight if someone uses the influence of another artist to
create something different?

it cant be that bad if their touring the world to packed
audiences and selling millions of albums.
i wouldnt say the strokes are a carbon copy of anyone
anyway...i cant think of another band that they totally
sound like.
people said to me they sound like velvet underground and
television and stuff, but personally, i cant hear the
similarities.
they dont sound like the stooges or the mc5 either...

I like the Strokes, they didn't set out to ''save''
anything... trendy rags heaped that praise on them. I think
they're just a good old fashioned no-frills rock band,
derivative, but who isn't? I give them two mild thumbs up.

Check out "Fun House" (1969!!!) and "Raw Power" by Iggy &
the Stooges, you'll see why I can't really get excited by
these new bands that really don't push it in any way. But

because they're borrowing a lot more than just influence,
they're aping the entire sound. you and even i may enjoy
some of the music but it's silly to think that some style
from 30 to 40 years ago is "saving" rock & roll now. it's a
huge step back instead of a step forward. way too safe to be
some kind of savior.
